Tip Tuesday: 7 Ways Managers Should Handle Public Negotiations

To obtain a contract during contentious negotiations, unions may use the media to disparage the company and its executive leadership. As a manager, it’s important to know how to handle corporate campaigns.

  • If a reporter contacts you directly, DO NOT comment. Refer them to the one designated public affairs person to handle comments
  • When/if you see stories about negotiations in the media, do not create panic or anxiety in the workplace surrounding the story
  • Accept that your employees have the right to their own opinion and that you respect that right
  • Encourage employee discussion and education
  • Correct false/misleading info
  • Provide facts in a respectful and unemotional manner
  • Understand that you do not have to give a firm answer to an employee right away. It’s OK to say you will look into it and get back to them
