To obtain a contract during contentious negotiations, unions may use the media to disparage the company and its executive leadership. As a manager, it’s important to know how to handle corporate campaigns.
- If a reporter contacts you directly, DO NOT comment. Refer them to the one designated public affairs person to handle comments
- When/if you see stories about negotiations in the media, do not create panic or anxiety in the workplace surrounding the story
- Accept that your employees have the right to their own opinion and that you respect that right
- Encourage employee discussion and education
- Correct false/misleading info
- Provide facts in a respectful and unemotional manner
- Understand that you do not have to give a firm answer to an employee right away. It’s OK to say you will look into it and get back to them
