Tip Tuesday: Is There a Right and Wrong Way to Structure HR and Labor Relations at a Company?
We are often asked, "Is there a right and wrong way to structure human resources and labor relations at a company?" While every client is unique, we often suggest the following:
- If you have a combination of union and non-union employees, you might consider having labor relations and HR report to the same senior executive
- Labor and employment attorneys should be involved in HR and labor relations staff meetings so they can better serve their internal clients (HR and LR) with the best information possible
- Be proactive in discussing possible settlements of grievances within house or outside counsel in advance of discussions with union
